Avatar: The Way of Water breaks more world box office records | Movies

Avatar: The Way of Water continues its march up the all-time grossing charts by becoming the sixth film to cross the $2 billion mark at the worldwide box office.

According to Deadline, the James Cameron-directed sequel to Avatar hit a total of $2.024 billion on Sunday, meaning it now leads Spider-Man: No Way Home and Jurassic World on the list of highest-grossing movies. Deadline predicts it will surpass the next two films, Avengers: Infinity War and Star Wars: The Force Awakens later this week to reach No. 4.

That will mean Cameron will have made three of the top four movies of all time, with the first Avatar movie at No. 1 with $2.9 billion and Titanic at No. 3 with $2.2 billion. Only Avengers: Endgame, at No. 2 with $2.8 billion, breaks the streak.

Avatar: The Way of Water’s results were greatly helped by its dominance outside of the US box office. Deadline reports that it became the No. 1 movie of all time in Austria, Lebanon, Slovakia, Mongolia and Colombia, among others, and became the biggest Hollywood movie of all time in India (where it cost $57.9 million). Its strongest non-US territory is China, where it has been the No. 1 film for five weeks and grossed $229.7 million. However, the Lunar New Year holiday saw a crop of commercial new releases, with The Wandering Earth II replacing it at the top of the charts.

Screen Rant’s Stephen M Colbert analysis suggests the film’s final haul will be at least $2.5 billion, which would see it overtake Titanic and land in third place.
